Su1000cc-208Did the dinosaurs die with a bang or a whimper?
We have now found the crater that killed them, but were the dinosaurs in decline before the asteroid hit? Some paleontologists are still resisting the evidence found by the geologists and astronomers, inisisting that their dinosaurs were dying out before the impact. \some still dispute that the impact was the final blow. Details of the effects of the impact, and new understanding of its dynamics, show how utterly devastating it was. is the 'edge effect' to blame for the apparent die off. Does a whole group of organisms experience 'old age' Why did so many other groups die off at the same time. Why did a few groups including our ancestors as tiny mammals survive

Behind the headlines; the technology, future uses, ethics and social implications of cloning technology. In the weeks before the con starts, cloning stories continue to hold the media's attention with 'stem cell' clones, etc. The panel will start by examining what is cloning, distinguishing as many types as have yet been announced, and also consider cloning of plants, animals, and people. Would a set of human clones be any different from a set of identical quadruplets, etc. is cloning "evil" or "good" or just neutral technology. What are the future implications.

Su1500cc-207Space: solar power update
The president is considering signing a treaty that would force us to reduce our output of carbon dioxide. The only way we have now of doing this is to reduce our industrial outpur and use of fossil fuels. This could cripple our econolmy, and make it harder to transistion to a fossil-fuel free future. There is another way. Solar power produced in Space can be collected and transmited to earth in very large quantitiies more inexpensively than using ground based alternative energy systems. Cheap access to earth orbit is needed for this to happen. Find out what has happened since the Carter Administration killled the SPS program in 1980. New designs have reduced the wieight to as little as 1000 tons in orbit per gigawatt produced. What are the current issues in Space solar power. What countries are interested. What is the US doing of anything.

Su1700cc-fiesta.eDiscovering New Solar Systems
Even though we cannot see them, we are now discovering about 1 new planet every month. This is the first time that science has proved the existance of planets around other stars. What does this tell us about our own solar system; is it typical. What is a "hot jupiter" and why are the astronomers scratching their heads over them. What are the implications so far for life in the universe. how soon will we be able to see these large (gas gaint size) planets directly, What about earth size planets.
