Fr1000cc-206Attacks on Science: Should
science defend itself against the anti-technologists? And how?
Some of the fundamental tenets of 'western' society and science are under
attack by a variety of politically motivated groups and ideologies, such as 'post-modernism' and
'deconstruction' The fpcus will be on explaining what the ideologies are, their motives, and why they are
diametrically opposed to the primary reason for 'progress' in civilization: the use of science to
understand the universe on the basis that there is one external reality or 'truth' that may be seen in the same
way by all peoples, no matter what their own cultureal origins are. What would be the result if the
anti-science groups were to become a major "political' force, instead of just inside the "ivory towers." What
would the world be like if such groups were in political control, and is this a realistic possibility?

Fr1100cc-207Long-range planning for
development of Mars and the Moon
A current topic of dispute in space circles is the next step beyond the
space station. Should it be the moon or mars or both and why. what should be the major purposes and goals
of planetary exploration and development. Mars is much further away, and a 2 to 3 year trip is
required, but it has all the elements that life requres. We can get to the moon in just 3 days
whenever we want, but it is in effect a gaint tecktite, totally void of any of the volatile elements required for
life. Other than the abundant oxygen, most of the others would have to be imported from the earth or the
asteroids to support a large lunar base or colony. how soon could a lunar mining base be established to support
the construction of solar power satellites. how usefull is the moon for astronomical observation compared
to high earth orbit.. Are there any resources on the moon or mars that would be worth shipping to earth.
what would be the motivation for establishing a human cology on either world.

Fr1200cc-207Terraforming Realities
What could we really do, using today's technology? Without going beyond
current physics, what types of terraforming actions are practical and could produce changes in
hundreds, rather than thousands of years. Why is changing the orbits and spin rates of the planets beyond
our capabilites for the forseable future, without a fundamental breakthrough in physics, or a way to ap the
power of the sun directly. how important is it to import volatiles to the surface of mars. how can this
be done without cratering the surface. Can you terraform an asteroid. can you terraform Venus. What
are some of the reasons for terraforming. Is there any opposition.

The promise, problems and perils of the impending nanotech revolution.
Nanotechnology has the potential to change society as fundamentally as the industrial revolution,
since the value of goods would drop, but designs for new goods would remain high. hand made items and
antiques would also retain value. how would nanotgech affect medicine and human lifespan. How soon
will the most primitive nanotech be created. What is the current status of progress toward it.

know about fandom
Science fiction fandom gives major awards that can influence publishers

Fr1600cc-207Game Novels: The New
Midlist
Writers who used to survive writing middling-popular sf and fantasy novels
are now turning to sharecropped stories based on game worlds. Why? Game designers, coming
from the other direction, are using these game novels as entries into sf and fantasy. What do they
bring to the field? Are these trends good, bad, or both?

Fr1600cc-fiesta.bAlternate
WorldCons
Alternate Worldcons, a 1994 short story anthology edited by Mike Resnick,
was an enormous success for a small press book; so much that it inspired a sequel, published in a
combined edition with the first collection by WC Books in 1996. In this panel, authors of Alternate
Worldcons stories, many of them Worldcon chairmen, talk about Worldcons -- past, future, and never-never.

hope for finding other life in our solar system
Actually, Europa is notour "last best hope," but one of the major
possible sites for water and carbon based life in the solar system. If it did have life, that life would
likely have originated and evolved totally independently from earth life, (unlike any life on mars, which may be
related to earth life if it exists). We will look at what needs to be done to investigate Europa as a possbile
abode of life under the ice, and where else in the solar system life might be found, whether is uses water,
ammonia, or some other solvent as its medium.

Fr1700cc-207Government's Role in Space
Does government funding accelerate or retard our space occupation? The
space station is 10 years behind schedule and has cost over 12 billion dollars already. The 6-8
space shuttle missions each year cost about 3 billion dollars. The non-profit agency NASA has frozen
private companies out of the space business in the past. With Dan Goldin, all this is changing. What should
NASA's new role be, and where should the dividing line be drawn between public and private funding
for space. Are there some things that only the government can or should do. What profit could their
be in a mars colony. How should the next generation of manned launch vehicles be developed.

Fr1700cc-centroYou want to do WHAT with my genes?
What good and bad can come of genome editing and genetic engineering.
Genome editing is the merging of natural and existing genomes with others and artifical genetic
material, in order to create new species, Genetic engineering is the addition and changing of specific traits in
individual species. imagine a tiny perfect bengal tiger, or a miniature pet elephant. How about a dog as
smart as a monkey. What types of genetic engineering may be applied to humans? What are the personal,
social and ethical implications for people and animals?
