It Takes Informed Voters to Elect a Rational Government!

2018-07-16 I had no plans to ever update this site again, because I figured Santorum was going to be happy being well-paid to support Trump on CNN (which is why I no longer watch CNN). However, it turns out he met Maria Butina at least once, who was arrested as a Russian agent on July 15. Here's evidence of their meeting at the 2014 NRA convention in Indianapolis:

I revived the Website Dump Rick because Rick Santorum, after being thrown out of the Senate by the voters of Pennsylvania, decided to run for President in 2012. So help keep Rick retired in 2012. Remind your friends and neighbors that he isn't fit to be elected.

Granted, he fits in with the Tea Partiers - has a sense of entitlement, hates poor people, hasn't read the Constitution - so, yes, he'd fit right in. It's not surprising that Rick Santorum seems like he's been Sarah Palin's role model in many ways.

If you're unfamiliar with Santorum, I've tracked many of his more outrageous opinions over the years. If anything, he's probably more right-wing now than he was years ago.

It's also useful to remember that Santorum, during his "retirement," made loads of money serving on the boards of many companies. He served on the board of one, Universal Health Services, from 2007 until 2011. Now, granted, members of the board often do little other than lend a famous name and collect money from the organization. But, this company ran treatment facilities, such as Keystone Marion Youth Center, which was sued by therapists alledging false Medicaid claims. This was in 2009. Santorum conintued serving on the board for two years after the lawsuit was filed.

In his November 2006 concession speech, Santorum said the Pennsylvanians were opinionated, and sometimes, that wasn't a good thing. Oh yes it was. It was a very good thing for Pennsylvanians, just not for him.

Here are some of the many reasons Pennsylvania dumped Rick after two terms in the Senate:

We've already seen that Rick is quite ignorant about science, history and the Constitution. Now, we've found out that he fails to understand literature as well.

Maybe he read the Cliff Notes version?

In his last election, Rick's team only played stupid anti-Casey ads since Santorum had no positive record to run on himself. Near the end of the campaign, Rick ran an anti-immigration ad. The 2006 Senate immigration bill was fairly sane (particularly compared with the House version of the Immigration bill) and Casey has said he would vote for it. Rick, despite the fact that a previous ad played up his own immigrant roots, is opposed to the bill as he says it is "an insult to taxpayers." The fact that my taxes paied Rick's salary for years was an insult to this taxpayer. The fact that Rick forced the taxpayers of Penn Hills to pay for his children's education when they were living in Virginia was an insult to many Penn Hills taxpayers.

Is this Rick's or the government's business?

Some interesting details on Rick's family finances...

SurveyUSA has posted another survey on the job approval of our senators. Rick must be celebrating - he no longer ranks at the bottom of the pile; he ranked 97 out of 100 in job approval. Of course, he was at the bottom of the pile in 2005....

Rick Santorum may have changed his mind on the teaching of intelligent design (sic) in the schools. He long argued in favor of teaching creationism...um "intelligent design" in public schools, including writing a pro-ID editorial. However, after the judge in the Dover case pretty much said that the pro-ID Dover school board lied in court, Rick seems to have changed his mind. Was this a genuine change of heart, or has he noticed which way the wind is blowing on this in Pennsylvania? Seems unlikely to be genuine, given Rick's consistently anti-science voting over the years.

By late '05, and Rick's supporters were so desperate that there was already at least one "pro-Rick" ad on TV in Pennsylvania. It's interesting to note that this ad was by a group calling itself Americans for Job Security. This group was already under investigation in Texas for "potential violations of a law prohibiting the use of corporate money to influence state elections."

Rick flip-flopped on penalizing people who could not evacuate during a natural disaster! First, he said, "There may be a need to look at tougher penalties on those who decide to ride it out and understand that there are consequences to not leaving." Then, Republican power-brokers claimed that Rick was "taken out of context." How is fully quoting a guy on TV taking his comments "out of context?" Rick "clarified" his remarks the next day.

Rick stands by gay spokesman. Rick's fairly infamous case of homophobia apparently does not extend, personally, to people who work for him. So he believes that it's OK to viciously attack gay people, try to exempt them from legal protections, and still let them work for you. Makes one want to comment about Uncle Tomming still being a part of our society...

Rick's 2005 book, It Takes A Family: Conservatism and the Common Good apparently wants to send us all back to the good old days of about 1952 or so - check for some commentary on Rick's book from actual women.

Did you know Rick likened the Democrats to Nazis multiple times? First vis a vis the Schiavo case, and later over the Democrats' attempt to filabuster judicial appointees. Rick later claimed he "meant no offense," but he did not retract his statement.

Think Rick is ethical? Here's some evidence to the contrary:

Do you think you have a right to get free weather information from the government's weather service? Rick doesn't think so - he thinks his constituents who own AccuWeather in State College should control online access to weather information. He's filed legislation (S. 786 - National Weather Services Duties Act of 2005) that would, essentially, force much government meteorological information off-line. Thanks to The Daily Kos for picking up on this - no one in the Pittsburgh media reported on this for days. Like many other politicians, particularly Republican politicians, Rick proves to be in the pocket of big business at the expense of the general tax-paying public. The local media finally picked up this story on April 26, after WDUQ mentioned it on the air on April 25. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Given the Trib's lust for Republican politicians, it's interesting that the Trib's article sounds even more against the AccuWeather sweetheart bill than the PG is!

One other thing - while many FEMA employees and politicians apparently had their heads buried in the sand the weekend before Katrina destroyed New Orleans and Gulfport and other parts of the Gulf Coast, those of us who bother to use the resources of the National Weather Service Web site saw in color how huge and powerful Katrina became just between Friday and Sunday morning. While many people in the government, including Santorum, are rabidly anti-science, Americans must promote scientific understanding of things like the weather. To restrict information means to doom people.

Rick, like many other conservatives, has ties to Amway, a company built on greed and fraud. If Rick is ethical, why is he taking money from a company that is just a big pyramid scheme with cultish overtones?

Rick is less in touch with the Senate than his nemesis Ted Kennedy! When Santorum and Kennedy battled over minimum wages on March 7, 2005, Kennedy's proposal lost 46-49, but Santorum's proposal lost 38-61. Until 2005, Rick was very much in favor of any and all Congressional pay raises that went his way. But after a major furor in Pennsylvania about the pay raises the Pennsylvania legislature voted itself, Rick suddenly spoke out against the most recent pay hike and claimed "I'll give my pay raise to charity".

Rick was in favor of the president's (failed) plan (IN 2005) overhaul Social Security, and has been going around the country in its support. Social Security surely needs some work - raising the taxable income level and raising the minimum age for people under 55 makes much more sense than the draconian methods Republicans like Santorum are supporting.

Rick is in favor of forcing the government into personal health issues, from what kind of birth control you may use, to what kinds of surgery you may have, to what are appropriate end-of-life measures. Do you really want the government more involved in these personal issues?
