Buttons

I've been collecting buttons since the early '70s. Being both a science fiction fan and a feminist means I have lots of buttons.

Button: Oh Where Have Saruman and Grima Gone?
Oh Where Have Saruman and Grima Gone?
There was nothing all that dangerous at the 2003 Capclave, still in the DC area. George Bush was in England for part of it, and I'm sure Dick Cheney was in an undisclosed location. It was even after election season! So the main thing I noted before Capclave was that Saruman and Grima were edited out of the Return of the King original theatrical edition. A lot of us thought it was a bad idea. While I agree that Peter Jackson and New Line have the right to edit the movie, I think this particular edit is close-to-criminal, given the importance Saruman had in the trilogy and Christopher Lee's longtime championing of the trilogy. So I wore this button on and off until December 16th. The movie wasn't, well, "ruined," but the first half hour and last half hour of ROTK were shakier than they should have been. I was mostly delighted by ROTK, however, and it was great to go to the Return of the One Party to see Peter and crew with all those Oscars. But if you like this button, you can order it from Nancy Lebovitz.
Button: No Stupid Sniper Is Going to Ruin My Convention
No stupid sniper is going to ruin my convention
This was just a virtual button - inspired by the 2001 Capclave button, described below. The 2002 Capclave was held during the sniper incidents in October and I believe there had been at least one shooting in Silver Spring. However, someone (Bob MacIntosh? Lee Gilliland?) did create this button and I bought one.
Button: No Stupid Terrorist Is Going to Ruin My Convention
No stupid terrorist is going to ruin my convention
The first convention we went to after September 11, 2001 was Capclave, held in College Park, Maryland. Capclave's chair, Bob MacIntosh, was, like the rest of us, really angry about the terrorism and the fear it engendered. So Bob had some buttons made up.
